Last Meeting
The two sides last met in the first T20I of the series in Colombo on 25 July. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field. Batting first, India lost Prithvi Shaw’s wicket on the very first ball of the innings, before a 51-run stand for the second wicket between Dhawan and Samson. Another stand between Dhawan and Yadav took the score to 113/3 in 14.1 overs, giving India a good platform from which to accelerate in the death overs. However, Sri Lanka bowled well and restricted India to just 164/5 in their allotted overs. For India, Yadav scored 50 from 34 balls while Shikhar Dhawan made 46 from 36. Chameera was Sri Lanka’s best bowler, taking 2/24, while Hasaranga (2/38) and Karunaratne (1/34) were the other wicket takers.
In their reply, Sri Lanka did not get off to the best possible start, losing 3 wickets for 50 in 7.1 overs. However, with the scoreboard reading 3/90 in the 13th over, the hosts appeared to have the platform to launch their bid for victory in the death overs, especially as Asalanka was striking the ball very well. However, a couple of wickets in Deepak Chahar’s third over took the wind out of their sails, reducing them to 111 for six in 16 overs. Bhubaneswar Kumar returned to polish off the tail to bowl out Sri Lanka for 126 in 18.3 overs. Kumar took 4/24 to emerge India’s best bowler, while Deepak Chahar took 2/24. Krunal Pandya, Varun Chakravarthi, Yuzvendra Chahal and Hardik Pandya took one wicket each.
