In the first match of the series on 18 July Sri Lanka batted first. They got off to a steady start before losing the wicket of Anushka Fernando in the 10th over with the scoreboard reading 49/1. Thereafter, despite a regular fall of wickets, the home team found themselves reasonably placed on 166 for five when Charith Asalanka got out in the 38th over. With skipper Shanaka still at the crease Sri Lanka had the platform for a reasonable score. But that was not to be, as they lost quick wickets to be reduced to 202/8 in the 47th over. But for a partnership of 40 runs for the ninth wicket their situation could have been much worse; as things transpired, Sri Lanka finished with a modest score of 262/9. Shamika Karunaratne top scored with an unbeaten 43 of 35 balls, while skipper Shanaka made 39 from 50 balls. Several among the top order got off to good starts but failed to convert them to big scores. For India, Chahal, Yadav, and Chahar took two wickets each, while the Pandya brothers took one each.
When India batted, they got off to a good start with an opening stand of 58. Ishan Kishan joined Dhawan at the crease at the fall of Shaw’s wicket and the pair proceeded to torment Sri Lanka with a quickfire stand of 85 runs in which Kishan contributed 59 of 42 balls. Another stand of 72 for the third wicket saw India to a comfortable position of 215 for 3 in the 31st over. India romped to a 7-wicket win with more than 13 overs to spare. Skipper Dhawan scored an unbeaten 86 off 95 balls to emerge as the team’s top scorer. For Sri Lanka, De Silva was the most successful bowler taking 2/49, while Sandakan took the only other wicket to fall.
