Analysis
The last meeting between the sides came more than five years ago in the world T20 Nagpur in March 2016. That match went in West Indies’ favour, as the Caribbeans won the game by three wickets. While South Africa have won the test series against West Indies 2-0, West Indies are a very different proposition in a T20 game. However, South Africa will be encouraged by the form of some of the key players who are likely to play a big role in the T20 series. According to us, South Africa’s performance will revolve around three key players, two batsman and a bowler. The batsmen are Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, while the bowler we have in mind is T Shamsi.
De Kock last played a T20I game in December 2020. However, with his brilliant performances in the Indian Premier league for the champion team Mumbai Indians, de Kock has proved to be one of the best T20 batsmen South Africa has ever produced. As an opening batsman in white ball cricket, De Kock can take the game away during the powerplay overs. He has scored 1303 runs in 47 matches at an average of 31.02 with the top score of 79 not out. In his last 11 T20I innings de Kock has scored 4 half-centuries. In the absence of Du Plessis who has retired from international cricket, Van der Dussen is expected to prop up the South Africa middle order. In his last five matches Van der Dussen has scored 222 runs at an average of 111.00 with a strike rate of 153.10. West Indies batsmen are used to facing fast bowling but most of the players are not comfortable against spin. In his last 10 matches Shamsi has taken 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.24 and a strike rate of 15.28. Shamsi could turn the match in the middle overs by putting the break on the scoring rate.
