New Zealand Highest Individual ODI Scores

ODIs are becoming high-scoring day by day. Once the 200-run individual score was reached, many followed the suit in ODIs to get there, including Martin Guptill from New Zealand. Many have scored match-winning hundreds in the past for New Zealand and that is what we are going to have a look at in this article.

Here’s a list of the top 10 highest individual scores for New Zealand on ODIs.

Martin Guptill features three times on this list. His three innings are included in the top 4 highest individual scores for New Zealand. The list is dominated by top-order players, mainly openers, but there’s an exception in the form of Luke Ronchi lower down the order.

Most of these innings have happened batting first except for just a couple. Apart from the innings of Glenn Turner in 1975, all the other innings have come in the 21st century.

Martin Guptill – 237 Not Out

in Guptill is at the top with an innings of 237 not out off 163 balls against West Indies at home in Wellington. The innings came in a high-profile match, the quarterfinal of the 2015 ODI World Cup. It was the fourth quarterfinal of the 2015 World Cup that took place on 21 March 2015. New Zealand batted first and managed to put 393 on board. Martin Guptill, opening the batting for New Zealand, scored 237. Basically, he scored about 60% of the team’s total runs. In this innings, Guptill had a strike rate of 145.39 – the second-highest strike rate on this list – with 24 fours and 11 sixes. New Zealand won the match comfortably by 150 runs and proceeded to the semifinal round. Guptill was named the Man of the Match.

Martin Gup

Martin Guptill – 189 Not Out

ptill is placed second as well with 189 not out against England in Southampton on 2 June 2013. It was the 2nd ODI of the 3-match ODI series against England. New Zealand were already up 1-0 in the series. New Zealand opted to bat first and scored 359 runs, out of which 189 runs were scored by Guptill – that is about 52% of the team’s total number of runs. Guptill hit 19 fours and a couple of sixes in the innings and had a strike rate of 121.93. The innings lasted 216 minutes. New Zealand eventually won by 86 runs with Guptill expectedly winning the Man of the Match award.

Ross Taylor

Ross Taylor – 181 Not Out

aylor, the explosive middle-order batsman, is third with an innings of 181 not out against England at home in Dunedin while chasing 339. The match was held on 7 March 2018. It was the 4th match of the 5-match series and New Zealand were lagging in the series 2-1. England batted first and scored 335. In this steep chase, New Zealand were quickly reduced to 2 runs for 2 wickets. Ross Taylor walked in, blasted off 181 in just 147 deliveries and took New Zealand over the line in the 50th over. He hit 17 fours and 6 sixes and had a strike rate of 123.12. New Zealand won the match by 5 wickets with 3 balls remaining. Ross Taylor was awarded the Man of the Match for this superb series-levelling innings.

Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill – 180 Not Out

features on the list of top run-scorers for New Zealand in ODIs for the third time. He scored 180 not out against South Africa at home in Hamilton on 1 March 2017 while chasing 280 to win. This was the fourth ODI of the series with South Africa leading 2-1. South Africa batted first and put up a decent 279 on the board. In the chase, Martin Guptill took the match away single-handedly with an innings of 180 not out off 138 balls with 15 fours and 11 sixes. New Zealand got over the line with 5 overs and 7 wickets to spare and levelled the series. Guptill scored about 65% of the team’s runs total and got awarded the Man of the Match for his achievement.

Lou Vincent R

Lou Vincent – 172

ent’s 172 while opening the batting for New Zealand features 5th on this list of the highest’s run scores in ODIs by Kiwis. The innings took place back in 2005 away from home in Bulawayo on 24 August. It was the first match of the triangular series. New Zealand won the toss against Zimbabwe and opted to bat first. Vincent opened the innings for New Zealand and scored 172 off just 120 deliveries helping his team reach a mammoth total of 397. He hit 16 fours and 9 sixes in that innings and had a strike rate of over 140. New Zealand won the match by 192 runs and Vincent received the Man of the Match for this blitz of an innings.

Glenn Turner –

Glenn Turner – 171 Not Out

have Glenn Turner who scored 171 not out against East Africa in Birmingham in the first ODI World Cup that took place in 1975. These were the times when matches used to be 60 overs long. New Zealand won the toss and batted first against East Africa who were taking part in their first-ever ODI match. Glenn Turner scored 171 off 190 deliveries with 16 fours and 2 sixes and helped New Zealand reach 309. It was too much for East Africa to handle as they lost the match by 181 runs. Turner’s strike rate of 85.07 is the lowest among the innings included in this list. He received the Man of the Match for this ahead-of-his-time innings.

Luke Ronchi – 17

Luke Ronchi – 170 Not Out

170 not out batting down the order is placed 7th. The score was made in an ODI against Sri Lanka at home in Dunedin on 23 January 2015. New Zealand was ahead in the series 2-1 and this was the third ODI of the series. New Zealand batted first and were reduced to 5 for 93. Then Luke Ronchi along with Gran Elliot came to the rescue and propelled New Zealand to 360 in 50 overs. They both scored centuries and remained not out. Luke Ronchi scored 170 off 122 balls with 14 fours and 9 sixes. Luke Ronchi scored these runs in just 99 deliveries at a strike rate of 171 – the highest on this list. New Zealand won the match comfortably by 108 runs.

Brandon McCullum –

Brandon McCullum – 166

individual scores for New Zealand came in the same match in 2008 against Ireland. One of the heroes was Brendon McCullum who scored 166 runs while opening the innings. The match took place away from home in Aberdeen on 1 July 2008 in a tri-nation series. New Zealand batted first and put 402 on the board thanks to quickfire 166 off 135 deliveries from Brendon McCullum. He hit 12 fours and 10 sixes in the process and had a strike rate of about 123. McCullum was involved in a 274-run partnership with James Marshall and was the first one to get out.

James Marshall – 1

James Marshall – 161

ore more than 160 in that ODI in Aberdeen against Ireland was James Marshall. He, along with Brendon McCullum, was involved in a mammoth partnership at the top of the order. Marshall scored 161 runs off 141 deliveries. He was slightly slower than McCullum. Marshall hit 11 fours and 4 sixes and ended the innings with a strike rate of 114.18. In the end, New Zealand set a target of 403 for Ireland. They folded pretty meekly on 112 and lost the ODI by a huge margin of 290 runs.

Kane Williamson –

Kane Williamson – 148

least on this list is the current New Zealand captain and one of the greatest batsmen of the current era, Kane Williamson. He took part in a crucial innings of 148 against West Indies in the league stage of the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup. The day-night encounter was held at Old Trafford, Manchester on 22 June 2019. Williamson came in to bat at no. 3 on the second ball of the innings. New Zealand soon lost the other opener for naught as well. Williamson steered the innings until 47th over of the match, scoring 148 off 154 balls. He hit 14 fours and just 1 six in the process and managed a strike rate of close to 100. The target was set to 292 which West Indies failed to achieve by just 5 runs. Kane Williamson was named the Man of the Match for his wonderful rescue.
