Most Runs in the IPL in India

Most Runs in the IPL

The Indian Premier League has established itself as the most successful cricket league in the world. Since its inception in 2008, the league has grown in popularity, attracting the best cricketing talents from across the world. Players who have performed in the IPL have benefited in their international careers as well. If we need proof of this assertion, we need to look no further than the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and Joffra Archer who capped a brilliant IPL 2019 season by helping England to their maiden ODI World Cup.

Top Batsmen Who Have Scored Most Runs in the IPL History

Several international batsmen have cemented their reputations in the IPL with their consistent run-scoring ability. In this article, we will take a look at the IPL records of the five highest run-scorers of the competition over the years.

Virat Kohli

The India captain — whose penchant for run-making is huge — rules the roost among the top run-getters in the IPL. In 177 matches since the first IPL season in 2008, Kohli has made 5412 runs at 37.84 with five hundreds and 36 fifties, including the top score of 113. In the process, Kohli has hit 480 fours and 190 sixes. Kohli began his IPL campaign in the 2008 season with, by his standard, a rather poor performance. In 13 matches, he made just 165 runs at an average of 15.00. He did not score a single half-century and his highest score was just 38. Though he improved in the next two seasons, it was not until 2011 that he showed glimpses of his run-making ability, with 557 runs from 16 matches at an average of 46.41. Then came another slump in the next season when his average fell below 30. In 2013, he was again among the runs, getting 634 runs in 16 games at 45.28. He had six half-centuries including the top score of 99. Another sub-30 average in 2014 was followed by a 45-plus average in 2015. Then came the season in 2016 that most cricketers can only dream of. In 16 matches that season, Kohli made 973 runs with the help of four centuries and seven half-centuries at an unbelievable average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03. That effort took RCB to the final but, frustratingly, could not deliver them the title.

Suresh Raina

Chennai Super Kings owe their success largely to Suresh Raina’s consistent run-making, year after year. Chennai Super Kings have benefited not only from Raina’s runs at the top of the order but also from his ability to provide breakthroughs with the ball and his brilliant fielding. In 193 matches, Raina has scored 5368 runs at 33.34 with one hundred and 38 fifties, including his top score of 100 not out. Raina has embellished his runs with 493 fours and 194 sixes. It is a testament to Raina’s consistency that he has never made less than 374 runs in any of the 12 IPL seasons he has played in. He has made 421 runs or more in all but three seasons. His by far best season, 2013, saw Raina garner 548 runs in 18 matches at an average of 42.15 with a strike rate of 150.13, one century and four half-centuries. That was followed by another great season in 2014 when Raina scored 523 runs in 16 matches at an average of 40.23 with a strike rate of 146.08.

Ro

Rohit Sharma

recent years, Rohit Sharma has been a constant feature for Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise of the IPL. In fact, Sharma began his IPL career with the former Deccan Chargers with whom he spent the first three seasons of the league. In 2009, he helped DC to the IPL title. It was only in 2011 that he joined Mumbai Indians and it was not until 2013 that he became their captain. He has since led the MI side to three IPL titles. In 188 matches, Sharma has scored 4898 runs at 31.60 with one hundred and 36 fifties, including the top score of 109 not out. Sharma has made his runs with the help of 431 fours and 194 sixes. Barring the IPL season 2018, Sharma has scored 333 or more runs every year. Interestingly, Rohit has not allowed the pressures of captaincy to affect his performance. Consider the four title-winning seasons of Mumbai Indians. In 2013, Sharma made 538 runs in 19 matches, his best season in terms of runs scored when MI became champions for the first time. In 2015, he made 482 runs to help his side to their second title win. Admittedly, 2017 was a poor season for Sharma who got just 333 runs at 23.78. However, in their fourth title-winning season in 2019, Mumbai Indians rode on Sharma’s 405 runs, though he got them at a relatively low average of 28.92.

Davi

David Warner

ref="https://www.cric-life.com/player/david-warner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">David Warner has established himself as a name to reckon with in the IPL. Warner played for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL seasons from 2009 to 2013. After he had switched to Sunrisers Hyderabad he took his batting to another level. In seasons 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019, Warner scored 528, 562, 848, 641 and 692 runs, respectively, for SH. His lowest batting average during these seasons was 43.23 achieved in 2015. In 136 matches, Warner has scored 4706 runs at 43.17 with four hundreds and 44 fifties, including the top score of 126. Warner’s runs have included 458 fours and 181 sixes. In fact, Warner has developed an addiction for the Orange Cap, a reward given to the highest run-scorer of an IPL season, winning the prize three times over the last five years. Warner won the Orange Cap in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Interesting fact, none of those three seasons was his best in the IPL. His best IPL season was 2016 when he made 848 runs in 17 matches at an average of 60.57 with nine half-centuries. That season must have been more satisfying than any Orange-Cap-winning season as Warner helped Sunrisers to the title that year. If he did not emerge the highest scorer that year, the blame must have been laid at Virat Kohli’s doorstep as the RCB star batsman made 125 more runs than Warner that season!

Shikhar

Shikhar Dhawan

In 159 matches, Dhawan has scored 4579 runs at 43.17 with 37 fifties, including the top score of 97 not out. Dhawan’s runs have included 524 fours and 96 sixes. Dhawan has been in and out of many teams in the IPL but his most satisfying year must have been 2016 when, alongside Warner, he helped Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden title. That season Dhawan made 501 runs in 17 games at an average of 38.53 with four half-centuries. However, in terms of runs scored he has had two even better seasons. The first came in 2012 when he made 569 runs from 15 matches at an average of 40.64, including five half-centuries. The next one came in 2019 when he scored 521 runs in 16 matches at an average of 34.73 with five half-centuries, including his top score of 97 not out.

uns in an IPL season came in 2016 when Virat Kohli went berserk. Scoring just 27 runs short of 1000 in 16 matches, Kohli had four tons and seven half-centuries to show for his unbelievable appetite for runs.

ppa won the Orange Cap for the most runs in the IPL 2014. Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Uthappa scored 660 runs in 16 matches at 44.00. His runs, made at a strike rate of 137.78, included 74 fours and 18 sixes. He registered five fifties, including the top score of 83 not out. In a home game against Delhi Daredevils, Uthappa found his best form, helping himself to 55 runs off 41 balls, though it wasn’t enough to prevent DD from winning the match. Likewise, Uthappa’s 47 off 38 balls came in a losing cause against CSK. Away against Rajasthan Royals, Uthappa scored 65 off 52 only to see his side losing by 10 runs. It was a bizarre season for KKR who found themselves staring down the barrel with just two wins to show after seven matches. They would have to win at least six of their remaining seven league matches. Thanks to Uthappa, they won them all. His match-winning 80 off 52 against MI was followed by another match-winning 40 off 33 balls against Sunrisers, followed by yet another match-winning 67 off 39 against CSK followed in turn by another match-winning 83 not out in 51 balls against RCB. The icing on Uthappa’s cake came with 42 off 30 balls in the first qualifier to take KKR to their second final which they won and became champions again.

Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Warner scored 562 runs in 14 matches at 43.23. His runs, made at a strike rate of 156.54, included 65 fours and 21 sixes. He registered seven fifties, including the top score of 91. Though his 53 off 42 balls, chasing an improbable 210 to win against CSK, went in vain, it set the tone for the flood of runs to come from Warner’s bat that season. In his next game, Warner made 57 off 27 to make a target of 167 set by RCB look smaller than it was. A few matches later, Warner got his revenge against KKR when he blasted 91 off 55 balls to help his side to a convincing win, though by the DL method. A blast of 58 runs off 41 balls against KXIP helped Sunrisers to yet another win. That was followed by 61 off 28 balls to help take revenge against CSK. KXIP were due for another whipping that Warner gave them with 81 off 52 balls, though Warner’s exploits were still not enough to help SH qualify for the playoffs.

Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli scored 973 runs in 16 matches at 81.08. His runs, made at a strike rate of 152.03, included 83 fours and 38 sixes. He registered four hundreds and seven fifties, including his top score of 113. It took a few matches before Kohli found his form that season. However, his unbeaten 100 off 82 balls was not enough to prevent Gujarat Lions from winning the game. Kohli was at it again when RCB met Rising Pune Supergiants. Chasing a target of 192 to win, RCB rode Kohli’s unbeaten 108 off 58 balls to accomplish it with an over to spare. A nine-wicket win for RCB was achieved when Kohli saw fit to flay KKR’s bowlers for an unbeaten 75 off 51, to help chase down a target of 184. A few days later, he reminded KXIP who was the real king with an imperious 113 off 50 balls that led to an 82-ball rout of the Punjab squad. Kohli finished the league stage with a flourish, helping himself to 54 not out off 45 balls to send Delhi Daredevils scampering for cover.

David Warner won the Orange Cap

for the most runs in the season for the second time in three years. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Warner scored 641 runs in 14 matches at 58.27. His runs, made at a strike rate of 141.81, included 63 fours and 26 sixes. He registered one hundred and four fifties, including the top score of 126. An unbeaten 76 off 45 balls by Warner saw SH beating Gujarat Lions comfortably, though a few days later, his 49 off 34 balls against MI was to no avail. Warner’s unbeaten 70 off 54 helped SH prevail over KXIP but the Aussie left-hander had to wait for two weeks before he found the same kind of form again, this time against KKR with 126 off 59 balls to help his side to a 46-run victory. Another fortnight later, he gave Gujarat Lions another taste of defeat with 69 off 52 balls. Warner’s 37 off 35 balls in the Eliminator against KKR was washed out in a DL decision that favoured Gambhir’s men.

claim to the Orange Cap for the most runs in the IPL 2018 when it was given to Kane Williamson. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Williamson scored 735 runs in 17 matches at 52.50. His runs, made at a strike rate of 142.44, included 63 fours and 28 sixes. He registered eight fifties, including his top score of 84. Williamson showed his intent very early in the competition with 50 off 44 against Kolkata Knight Riders. After restricting KKR to 138/8 on their home soil, Sunrisers chased down the target in 19 overs with five wickets in hand. Williamson’s top score of 84 came a few matches later against Chennai Super Kings. Chasing a target of 183 to win, at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Sunrisers came very close (178/6) on the back of Williamson’s 84 off 51 balls. Williamson’s 63 off 43 balls helped SH to an 11-run win against Rajasthan Royals. Another brilliant innings of 56 off 39 balls was the precursor to a five-run victory against RCB. However, in SH’s next match against RCB, Williamson’s 81 off 42 went in vain as RCB prevailed by 14 runs. In the final against CSK, Williamson made 47 off 36 balls to help set CSK a target of 179 but Dhoni’s wards chased it down with more than an over to spare.

cricket, David Warner reclaimed the Orange Cap for the most runs in an IPL season by winning it for the third time in 2019. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Warner scored 692 runs in 12 matches at 69.20. His runs, made at a strike rate of 143.86, included 57 fours and 21 sixes. He registered one hundred and eight fifties, including his top score of 100 not out. He got 85 off 53 balls in his very first match of the IPL season against KKR, helping Sunrisers to a score of 181/3 only to see KKR chase it down. However, a 69 off 37 balls was enough to help his side to a victory against Rajasthan Royals. An unbeaten 70 off 62 against Kings XI Punjab was to no avail though. Chasing a modest target of 156 against Delhi Capitals, Warner battled alone to help himself to 51 off 47 balls only to see his side bowled out for 116. Warner got his revenge against KXIP in Sunrisers’ home game when he smashed 81 off 56 balls to boost his team to a match-winning total of 212/6. Thanks to Warner’s efforts, Sunrisers made the playoffs, though they ended up in fourth place.
