1. 361/1 Versus Australia at Jaipur on 16 October 2013

In this article, we look at India’s highest successful run chase in ODI cricket which was achieved against Australia in Jaipur in October 2013 when India scored 361/1. Among India’s next four highest run chases, two came against Australia, while one each was registered against England and Pakistan respectively.
In the 2nd ODI of a series in Jaipur on 16 October 2013, Australia batted first and scored 359/5 in their allotted 50 overs. All their top five batsmen — Finch, Hughes, Watson, Bailey and Maxwell — made fifties, with skipper Bailey, the highest scorer, reaching 92 not out in 50 balls. In India’s reply, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings and put on 176 for the first wicket in 26.1 overs before Dhawan was out for 95 off 86 balls with 14 fours. In came Virat Kohli and a partnership between him and Rohit Sharma got India across the line in 43.3 overs. While Kohli scored 100 in 52 balls with 8 fours and 7 sixes, Sharma made 141 in 123 balls with 17 fours and 4 sixes to help set a record for India’s highest ODI chase.
2. 356/7 Versus England at Pune on 15 January 2017
England and India met in Pune for the 1st ODI of a series on 15 January 2017. Batting first, England scored 350/7. Joe Root became the top-scorer with his 78 off 95 balls, including 4 fours and a six. Jason Roy with 73 off 61 balls, including 12 fours, and Stokes who made 62 off 40 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes were the other batsmen to score half-centuries. When India batted, they were reduced to 63/4 in 11.5 overs, when Kedar Jadhav took guard at the wicket. Then followed an epic partnership of 200 runs between Kohli and Jadhav that ended when Kohli was out for 122 off 105 balls with 8 fours and 5 sixes. The scorecard read 263/5 in 36.2 overs. Jadhav went on to make 120 in 76 balls with 12 fours and 4 sixes before he got out with India at 291/6 in 39.5 overs. After that, Hardik Pandya, who made 40 off 37 balls with 3 fours and a six, guided India home to a 3-wicket win with 11 balls to spare.
3. 351/4 Versus Australia at Nagpur on 30 October 2013
On Australia’s tour of India, Australia batted first in the 6th ODI of a series played in Nagpur on 30 October 2013. They scored 350/6 on the back of a 3rd-wicket partnership of 168 runs between Shane Watson and George Bailey. Watson scored 102 in 94 balls with 13 fours and 3 sixes. Bailey made 156 runs in 114 balls with 13 fours and 6 sixes. When India batted, they got off to a great start when Sharma and Dhawan put on an opening partnership of 178 in 29.3 before Sharma got out for 79 in 89 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Dhawan went on to score 100 in 102 balls with 11 fours, while Kohli made an unbeaten 115 off 66 balls with 18 fours and a six to guide India to a 6-wicket win with 3 balls to spare.
4. 331/4 Versus Australia at Sydney on 23 January 2016
In the 5th match of a series in Sydney played on 23 January 2016 during India’s tour of Australia, the hosts batted first. Opener David Warner scored 122 off 113 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes. By the time he was out, Australia had reached 235/5 in 38.5 overs. Mitchell Marsh, who made 102 not out in 84 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes, registered an 85-run stand with Wade (36 in 27 balls) to help his side to 330/7. When India batted, Sharma and Dhawan had an opening stand of 123 before Dhawan got out in the 19th over, having scored 78 in 56 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Though Virat Kohli fell cheaply, Rohit Sharma went on to score 99 off 108 balls with 9 fours and a six. Manish Pandey, who made 104 in 81 balls with 8 fours and a six, guided India home with 6 wickets and 2 balls to spare.
5. 330/4 Versus Pakistan at Dhaka on 18 March 2012
India and Pakistan clashed in the 5th match of the Asia Cup in Dhaka on 18 March 2012. Batting first, Pakistan rode on an opening stand of 224 between Md Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed before Jamshed got out for 112 in 104 balls with 10 fours and a six. Md Hafeez continued the good work until he was out with the Pakistan score reading 225 for 2 in 36.2 overs. Hafeez made 105 in 113 balls with 9 fours and a six. Umar Akmal made 28 and Younis Khan scored 52 as Pakistan reached an eventual score of 329/6. After Gautam Gambhir got out for no score to the second ball he faced, Tendulkar and Kohli shared a second-wicket stand of 133 before Sachin was out for 52 off 48 balls with 5 fours and a six. Kohli, who made 183 off 148 balls with 22 fours and a six, found a reliable ally in Rohit Sharma who contributed 68 off 83 balls with 5 fours and a six. Thanks to their efforts, India managed to win with 6 wickets and 14 balls to spare.
In Conclusion
As already stated, the above list includes only successful chases. There have been instances when India have made substantial scores in the second innings of an ODI only to end up losing the game. For example, in November 2009, India were set a target of 350/4 by Australia in a match in Hyderabad. However, the hosts were bowled out for 347, losing the game by a wafer-thin margin of 3 runs.
