1975 ODI World Cup

p>In the inaugural edition in June 1975, eight teams participated and there were 60 overs per innings. Prudential Insurance was the sponsor and therefore the competition was named Prudential Cup. The final was held between West Indies and Australia. The Caribbeans batted first and piled 291 thanks to skipper Clive Lloyd’s hundred. He and Rohan Kanhai rescued the Windies from 50/3 by forming a 149-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The Windies then limited the Aussies to 274 to etch a 17-run win. Clive Lloyd was named the Player of the Match.

1979 ODI World Cup

England was the host once again and eight nations participated. The final was played between the Windies and England. Batting first, the Caribbeans amassed 286 aided by Viv Richards’s 138 not out. He was involved in a vital fifth-wicket partnership of 139 runs with Collis King.

The Poms only put up token resistance and crumbled to 194 all out. The Windies thus easily retained the trophy. Joel Garner shone with the ball, grabbing 5 scalps in 11 deliveries. Richards was declared the Player of the Match.

1983 ODI World Cup

the Prudential Cup 1983, there were again eight teams participating. India surprised all by beating mighty teams like the Windies, Australia and England to reach the final played against the Caribbeans. The Indians batted first and put up 183. They defended this low total capably and scored a 43-run triumph to emerge surprise winners. Mohinder Amarnath was named the Player of the Match for his all-round efforts.

1987 Cricket World Cup

The Aussies batted first and notched up 253/5 aided by David Boon’s 75 off 125 balls and Mike Veletta’s 45 in 31. The game went to the wire and the Aussies kept their nerve to triumph by seven runs. Boon was named the Player of the Match.

1992 ODI

1992 ODI World Cup

edition was called Benson & Hedges Cup and was hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Nine nations participated and Pakistan and England went to the day-night final at MCG.

Pakistan won the toss and put up 249/6. They then restricted the Poms to 227 to etch a 22-run triumph. Wasim Akram won the Man of the Match award for his excellent bowling effort.

1996 ODI

India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan hosted the 1996 event which was named Wills World Cup. 12 countries participated in this edition. The final was held between Australia and Sri Lanka.

Lanka won the toss and asked the Aussies to bat first. They scored 241/7 helped by a 101-run partnership for the second wicket between Ricky Ponting and skipper Mark Taylor. The Lankans chased down the target successfully, losing just three wickets thanks to Aravinda de Silva’s brilliant ton. They thus won the world cup title for the first time. De Silva was named the Player of the Match.

1999 ODI W

orld Cup was hosted by England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Netherlands and 12 countries participated in the tournament that year. Pakistan and Australia reached the final which was played at Lord’s.

The Aussies bowled out Pakistan for just 132 in 39 overs helped by Shane Warne’s four-for. Then, Adam Gilchrist smashed a quick fifty and assisted Australia to reach the target in a little more than 20 overs. Australia thus won the world cup for the second time. Warne was declared the Player of the Match.

2003 ODI World

2003 ODI World Cup

Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya jointly hosted this edition. 14 sides participated and the final was played between Australia and India. It was held at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Australia batted first and took the Indians out of the game by amassing 359/2. Their innings was marked by an unbeaten 234-run partnership between Damien Martin and Ricky Ponting. India managed to make just 234 and lost by a whopping 125 runs. Ponting won the Player of the Match award.

2007 ODI World

2007 ODI World Cup

ndies hosted this event in which 16 teams took part. Sri Lanka and Australia reached the final which took place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

A rain delay restricted the final to 38 overs per side. Batting first, the Aussies posted 281/4 helped by Adam Gilchrist’s belligerent hundred. Sri Lanka’s reply was interrupted by rain and they were restricted to 215/8 in their allotted overs. The Aussies thus won by 53 runs as per the Duckworth-Lewis system. They thus achieved a hat trick of world cup triumphs and won their fourth title overall. Gilchrist was declared the Player of the Match.

Lanka and Bangladesh jointly hosted this edition in which 14 sides took part. India and Sri Lanka were the finalists and the match was played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka batted first and amassed 274/6, cracking an amazing 91 in the last 10 overs. The Indians chased the target successfully helped by opener Gautam Gambhir’s 97 and skipper MS Dhoni’s 91 not out. Dhoni finished the game with a mighty sixer over long-on. He won the Player of the Match award.

2015 ODI World Cup

2015 ODI World CupNew Zealand co-hosted the 2015 edition featuring 14 teams. The co-hosts reached the final played at MCG.

The Aussies restricted the Kiwis to 183 and chased the target easily, losing just three wickets. They were helped by useful fifties from Michael Clarke and Steven Smith. Australia’s James Faulkner won the Player of the Match award.

d hosted this event with 10 teams participating. The group games were organised in a round-robin format with New Zealand and England qualifying for the final at Lord’s.

The Kiwis batted first and piled 241/8. England also posted 241 and the match ended in a tie. In the Super Over, each team notched up 15 runs and there was another tie. The match was decided by boundary count with England’s 26 boundaries in the game prevailing over New Zealand’s 17. Therefore, England were declared winners of the 2019 World Cup.
